DISCIPLINE THE CITY (May—Dec 2017)

The city cares for you. Design thinking creates better public spaces that promote citizens’ health, happiness, and well being. Algorithms harness data to ensure the optimisation of traffic, labour and goods. The city is not always perfect, but it is always learning, always upgrading. Community is strengthened, heritage is preserved, old buildings and nature reserves are rehabilitated. Under the shade of neatly planted trees, citizens march on to school, to work. The discerning citizen is always upgrading.

You are empowered by the following approved programmes.

Discipline the City is The Substation's cultural question for 2017. The year's programme look at how cities have evolved from unruly, heterogeneous space to over-designed and regulated spaces. The year-long theme unfolds with three ongoing platforms: Salon, Workshop, and Cinema which unpack issues of control and regulation in the city, contextualising discipline in ways both everyday and esoteric.

In addition to this year-long programme, The Substation presents Discipline the City - The Exhibition. The exhibition reconfigures The Substation into a set of spaces that defy conventional use of the building. Within these spaces, the contents and sequence of the works presented encourage visitors to consider ideas of spatiality, proximity and architecture. This presentation is co-curated by Alan Oei, Artistic Director of The Substation, and Joshua Comaroff, a designer and assistant professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design.
