Theatre Research

Static Metamorphosis | Eugene Chow

Static Metamorphosis is a new theatre collective that began re-imagining comic strips onto platform theatre. Comics have this amazing ability to take us on a journey through landscapes, narratives and characters all just in a box, and platform theatre has that exact same capacity on just one platform. Formed by Lecoq-trained actor Eugene Chow in 2024, the multi-faceted group of artists is a growing collective that does everything from gestural theatre to dance to sound, bringing their talents onto performance spaces to enhance the theatrical experience of their devised themes.

Indie Music Gigs

THE SUBSTATION AT ROCKOUSTIKA (2024 - 2025) | Requiem Rising Singapore

The Substation co-programmed the local set for ROCKOUSTIKA, a bi-monthly series of Live music acts, organised by architect-helmed independent music events company, Requiem Rising Singapore (RRSG), as a free platform for emerging and established musicians to play in a bar gig setting. The collaboration featured a guest band from The Substation community alongside Singapore-based Filipino and Singaporean bands and visiting musicians from the Philippines.

Starting with Lion City punk rock pioneers, Plainsunset, in December 2024, the collab continued through 2025 as part of The Sub’s 35th anniversary series celebrating the music of Singapore artists—many of whom share their formative years playing at the old Substation Garden or Guinness Theatre, where it all began for Singapore indie music & the arts in 1990.

Plainsunset

As one of the first Singaporean bands that toured in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Shenzhen (China), Malaysia, and Australia, Plainsunset has put out in excess of five full-length releases and several splits. Indifferent to the changes of styles and popularity, they play their own blend of a mixture of punk rock and indie rock. This approach has led to them playing to crowds of over 10,000-strong. Their values include not taking themselves seriously, but taking the music seriously.

Like many pioneering local bands, Plainsunset has its share of solid memories growing up and building their early years with The Sub. This year-end hangout was organised to bring things back to basics—with live music, great friends, and Sunday grub.

Alongside Plainsunset in the lineup were Bibiboizz, 4D, Hannah’s Smoke, and Rated Phigie.

Midnight Mass

Emerging singer-songwriter, Wymo Oo, and his band Midnight Mass, played rock and pop covers, plus a surprise original by Wymo, '“Queen of My Heart” (2019).

As a live looping musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Wymo channels his heartfelt passion into his music, offering a transcendent experience that knows no borders… Wymo’s musical journey embarked as a part of the band, The Other Guys but has since transformed into a solo odyssey, defined by his distinct sound, characterized by a blend of live looping, an unassuming demeanor, and a profound love for music… [His music] invites listeners into a world of crackling melodies, visceral drum patterns, and tumultuous guitar riffs, all of which form the perfect alternative rock canvas for Wymo’s introspective lyrics.

~ Excerpt from review by Rick Jamm (2023), ‘Wymo’s Heartfelt Anthem: ‘A Little Bit of Your Love’ Unveiled’, Jamsphere, 20 September 2023. Available HERE.

Alongside Midnight Mass in the lineup were Fusion Frequency, System32, Fresco, and Unmute Band.

The Oddfellows

Formed in 1988 as a trio, The Oddfellows became a quartet in 1991 and released its seminal debut album, "Teenage Head" that same year and had a radio number 1 hit with "So Happy". The band has 3 studio albums, a couple of EPs and have been featured on movie soundtracks and compilations over the years. Still active to this day, The Oddfellows are known for their melodic indie rock, honest songwriting and good vibes.

The Sub and the ‘Oddies’ share fond memories of growing up together at the Substation Garden on Armenian Street, where it all began for Singapore indie music & the arts in 1990.

Alongside The Oddfellows in the lineup were Icebox (PARKA Music, Singapore), Parasouls (Lilystars Records, Philippines), and independent bands Toda and Morrph.

Windtree

Born out of friendship (and a few jam sessions on a hill somewhere between Tampines & Bedok), Windtree brings a unique mix from their love of nature, diverse sounds, and the bands they grew up with. Formed by four longtime friends – Sharil Ibrahim, Ali Imran Ibrahim, Fadhil Abdul Sidek and Syahadi Samad – the band draws inspiration from their bond and surroundings. Windtree dropped their first EP “Miles After Enterprise” in 2016, gaining recognition for the track Hold the Wire on LUSH 99.5FM. Since then, they’ve been on Music Day Out 2017 and 2021, toured across the region, opened for Indonesian pop artist Pusakata, released four singles – Embrace, Naifah’s Waltz, Goodbye Honeybee, and Never Meant to Be – and put out a second EP “Architecture of Partings” in 2024.

No stranger to the local music scene, vocalist Sharil is also part of the newly-formed Swara; while drummer Syahadi is known as one-fourth of sub:shaman.

Alongside Windtree in the lineup were Kai.Zen (PARKA Music, Singapore), Madsyrup, Melofilos, and Sax & Bongos.
