Helmed by two Artistic Directors,

Raka Maitra and Woon Tien Wei;

The Substation’s programmes took on an experimental approach where new initiatives were introduced such as residency and research programmes; and the re-introduction of SeptFest, a festival that includes workshops, performances and forums.

Despite of the pandemic, The Substation adapted to the changes and ventured more into the digital realms to keep the programmes going. For instance, organising online exhibitions, virtual reality games, online talks to even the usage of the famous communication platform, Telegram.

In addition, announcing The Substation’s closure on 2nd March 2021, there was the Septfest 2021 which paid homage to not only the marginalised communities but the Substation’s 30 years of history, and we concluded with an impactful exhibition, Mandala for Substation which set us thinking on the future of independent spaces and celebrating the Independent spirit.

Nonetheless, The Substation is proud to have served the arts community for the past 30 years

The main programmes ideated by the two artistic directors were:

Arts Education Programme, Associate Artist Programmes, Coming Home, Front-of-House, Isolation Web Series, Sandbox, Sept Fest 2021, The Substation Neighbourhood Project, We are not going back, we are coming around, Adventures of Temporal Displacement Agency and Mandala for Substation.
