You and I

You and I
As part of Sonic Visions
by Associate Artist Song-Ming Ang
Date: Friday 14 January – Wednesday 9 February 2011
Venue: The Substation Random Room
Admission: Free
Reception: 1pm-4pm, Saturday 15 January
This is an OpenHouse event

You and I is Song-Ming Ang’s first solo exhibition in Singapore, and forms part of his Sonic Visions series of events that will take place throughout January.

For this project, Associate Artist Song-Ming Ang posted an invitation on his website asking members of the public to post him a letter, telling him something personal— a memory, a secret, a compulsion, a habit, a relationship, an experience,an ambition… Using the contents of the letter as his starting point, Ang curated an audio response by mixing and compiling material to form a customised audio CD, and mailed these back to his respondents. The project has so far received close to forty letters from around the world, some from Ang’s friends and others from strangers. A selection of letters and their musical responses will be exhibited at The Substation Random Room.

A version of this exhibition was first shown at the SoundFjord Sonic Art Gallery in London during October and November 2010.

Sonic Visions is a series of events organised by Song-Ming Ang in conjunction with his first solo exhibition in Singapore, You and I. The programme brings together four music events, underlined variously by the spirit of collaboration, simplicity of ideas, and focus on processes. Sonic Visions is conceived with the aim of elaborating on Ang’s work, as well as a way of introducing the audience to his wide-ranging interests.

The exhibition is curated by Jason Wee. This event is supported by The Substation and the National Arts Council.
