moving images turns 10!

MI

THANK YOU FOR CELEBRATING OUR 10TH BIRTHDAY WITH US!

It was a fun-filled weekend (7 to 10 Dec '07) with film premieres, favourites, food, memorabilia, catching up with old friends, and making new ones!

The opening kicked off with a speech by one of our Directors, T Sasitharan, who started the Moving Images programme back in 1997; the premiere of "Girl in Red Sarong" by Jeremy Sing; and the hilarious "Zo Hee" (Make Movie) by Jacen Tan, a film specially commissioned by The Substation to celebrate this occasion.

Also as part of our celebrations were "Talking Movies", a talk show with Zhang Wenjie (National Museum), Ong Sor Fern (Straits Times) and Sun Koh (Filmmaker, Lucky7), a weekend flea market, and The Best of First Take. Congratulations to Fai Alias Rizal whose short film "Bob" was the Top Favourite for First Take 2007!

Some coverage and pictures are on www.hosaywood.com, A Nutshell Review, (thanks Jacen and Stefan!) and our facebook - please add moving images to your friends list :)

NEW: film producer Juan Foo wrote a piece about us on Sinema.sg. Have a look and learn a bit about our film history, and some significant work we have done! Thanks as always, Juan!

More updates and pictures to follow, but meanwhile, please send us your comments/greetings/feedback to movingimages@substation.org - tell us what you think of our programmes, and how we can serve you better!

Happy holidays, and keep your films coming our way!

the substation moving images presents :
the best of first take 2007

mi

First Take, happening every 1st Monday of the month at The Substation, is a popular screening of new local short films and is followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. A platform for new filmmakers and anyone who is interested in filmmaking to meet, exchange ideas and show their work. See the future talents of Singapore film!

For this special screening, we are presenting the favourites of each month, and a final vote is cast for the Top Favourite of First Take 2007!

Top Favourite of First Take 2006:
WAKING MONKEY / 3 MIN / CHRIS YEO SIEW HUA
A short film about the mischief and adventures of a girl who tries to steal cookies from the jar but fails to do so. She seeks the help from her elder brother destined to eternal slumber. A fuzzy film about the little wonders in life we fail to see sometimes.

HEARTWARE / 10 MIN / JOE PETER
Heartware delves into the mind of a man returning home to Singapore after a prolonged absence. With each of these brief visits, he delights at the thought of reuniting with family and friends in familiar surroundings, only to find that he is increasingly challenged by his past. Demons he thought he had long conquered resurface. He struggles to find reasons for them, as he runs the rule on a lost love and his identity. Dispirited by a past that continues to plague him, prosaic commentary takes the audience through a series of images of Singapore only he knows.

LADY AND THE VAMP / 4 MIN / SHAUN KOH
When a Vampire meets Gas Mask Girl.

THE LONELY ADVENTURE OF GEORGE THE SOUNDMAN / 9 MIN / CHRIS PENCAKOWSKI
George, a competent but lonely film sound recordist, decides to escape the apparent chaos of a film set and disappears into the countryside. Once there, he treats his trusted microphone (on a boom pole) to the lush and refreshing sounds of the meadows, cows, valleys and waterfall, which we often take for granted. He listens to Mother Nature... he listens to himself.

OLD TIMES / 14 MIN / CHEW TEE PAO
Old Times is a story about middle-aged couple, Lai and Rose. Being in a marriage for more than 30 years, the characters wonder whether there is still love between them besides living a monotonous life of plucking bean sprouts and watching senseless pugilistic dramas.

Colour Wash & Spin / 30min / Anna Christin Mallon
Featuring Singaporeans and expatriates in Singapore, this film is structured around questions that deal with cultural identity and the difficulties of finding it in a new and hybrid globe.

[Intermission]

BOB / 14 MIN / FAI RIZAL ALIAS
No girlfriend, no life, no worries. Bob is a simple man who is contented with his life of mundane routines and boring habits. From the moment he wakes up till he rolls back into bed at the end of the day, it seems that Bob is pretty much happy with his amazingly boring life – that is, until his mood changes and his emotions subconsciously get the better of him. The question is: why the sudden change, Bob?

TALKING IN BLACK AND WHITE / 12 MIN / MICHAEL WANG
1940 New York, a city rampaged by scandal and corruption. A gunshot rings in a gloomy alley. A long detective, Howard Hawkins, waits in a dingy bar, a bullet lodged in his right thigh. A blonde beauty, Katherine Dempsey, saunters in. A conversation ensues that reveals a story of love and deception, of lost and desperation, of a dark secret that will change their lives forever.

Block 46 / 12 min / GHAZY ALQUDCY
Block 46 tries to discover Singapore’s deepest secret about the mass suicide that happened on 6 April 2006. Not many know about this, as the media are not allowed to have coverage over this massacre. A total of 6 people committed suicide by jumping down from the top of the building to end their misery. This project was made as a Final Year Project through the course of Diploma in New Media under School of Technology for the Arts, Republic Polytechnic.

ZO GANG / 7 min / JACEN TAN
Film-maker wannabe, Ah-Tan is sick of his day job. Join Ah-Tan on his way to work one day, as he discusses and pokes fun at local film and music, while plotting his path to become Singapore's next great director.

the substation moving images presents :
7th Asian Film Symposium

sidf

The 7th Asian Film Symposium is a highly regarded programme that aims to deepen the dialogue and networking between local and regional filmmakers. It showcases exceptional independent films curated by guest programmers from neighbouring countries in Asia and facilitates talks and forums to discuss the Asian independent film scene.

A highlight this year is the Singapore premiere and the Opening Film “Love Conquers All”, Malaysian filmmaker Tan Chui Mui’s first feature film. She will be making an appearance and talk about the film that has won several awards including the Golden Digital Award at the 31st Hongkong International Film Festival, the VPRO Tiger Award at the 36th International Film Festival Rotterdam, and New Currents and FIPRESCI Awards at the 11th Pusan International Film Festival.

The 7th Asian Film Symposium will be introducing works by some of the region’s most outstanding and notable independent filmmakers through “S-Express”, a traveling short film programme that will be presented by the respective curators from each country. In addition, part of the screening component is a selection of short films from an Asian perspective by students from the Sydney Film School.

The “Forum on the Asian Film Festival Circuit” aims to address some of the concerns faced by many independent filmmakers in the region when taking their films to various film festivals. The Forum involves regional curators and filmmakers who will enlighten the audience about maximising distribution and give indispensable tips when taking part in festival competitions.

Closing the Symposium is the documentary, “Remember Chek Jawa” by independent Singapore filmmaker Eric Lim, which chronicles the discovery of one of Singapore's rare natural gems and how a group of untrained locals tried to preseve it from total loss. Eric will be present to meet the audience after the screening.

Dr Vincent O'Donnell:
A Season of Australian Cinema

Due to unexpected demand, there will be an additional evening screening of Picnic at Hanging Rock on Thursday, 23 Nov from 7.30pm to 10pm.

Picnic at Hanging Rock by Peter Weir, Sunday Too Far Away by Ken Hannam, and My Brilliant Career by Gillian Armstrong - just to name a few stellar films that marked the rebirth of Australian cinema in the 1970s. By using carefully selected films that explore developments in cinema in Australia over the past thirty years, each of the six sessions will begin with a discussion about the historical and social context of the film for the day, followed by the full screening of the film, and a discussion and analysis. This is a programme for those who like cinema for more than what blockbusters can offer, for those interested in the language of cinema, the emergence of a national voice in cinema, depictions of national identity in cinema, low to medium-budget filmmaking, diversity in national cinema, and cinema history.

Vincent O'Donnell has worked in the Australian film industry since the 1970s and was the executive producer for the state film agency in Victoria, Film Victoria. Besides producing and presenting the award-winning national radio programme "Arts Alive", Australia's only arts and culture current affairs radio programme, he has recently been awarded a doctorate for his research on the state film agencies in Australia and their contribution to national cinema and television culture.

Supported by Singapore Film Commission, Media Development Authority and MEDIAction!, Australian High Commission and Robertson Quay Hotel.
