What's On / Moving Images
The first year-round programme in Singapore dedicated to independent and short films, established in 1997. Moving Images is known for its diverse and innovative programming focusing on experimental films, shorts, and documentaries, nurturing local and Asian filmmakers and connecting them internationally. We organise screenings, festivals, workshops, seminars and mentoring programmes, including events like the annual Asian Film Symposium, the youth filmmaking challenge Reel Revolution, and the only biennial international documentary festival in Singapore - the Singapore Indie Doc Fest, which alternates with the biennial Singapore Short Film Festival.
Moving Images nurtures emerging filmmakers by giving them a voice, learning opportunities, exposure and dialogue with peers. Dialogue sessions are held in The Substation's intimate theatre which encourages profound, often intense discussions between filmmakers and audience. We are indebted to the enthusiastic support of our audiences - social interest/civil society groups, students, academics, international curators and programmers, and members of the film community. Run by a small but dedicated team including volunteers who are often filmmakers themselves, Moving Images aims to keep the community growing through fresh programming to lend new perspectives and attitudes to the art form, new platforms to support talent, and initiatives to grow the film audience.
Moving Images also actively connects Singapore films to international festivals and has become an important platform for local and Asian filmmakers to share their work and ideas. Filmmakers who have grown with us over the years include Royston Tan, Wee Li Lin, Tan Pin Pin, Sherman Ong, Tania Sng, just to name a few.
