The Substation is committed to researching, designing and presenting stimulating and exciting programmes that will instill and nurture critical thinking and creativity in young minds. The Substation has put together four programmes that we hope will contribute to a more holistic educational experience for students.

The four programmes – Contemporary Theatre and PerformanceContemporary Visual ArtsJourney Towards Contemporary Art: Learning and Understanding, and Urban Artology – Reassessing Street Art – were specifically designed to expose and instill a greater awareness of the history, development and artistic techniques of contemporary art forms, while emphasising local artists and art practices.

Awareness of Lights is a unique lighting workshop that provides an opportunity for participants to learn and understand the importance of lighting design and lights in a theatre setting. This workshop will equip participants with the technical expertise needed to understand lighting design for theatre and dance productions, videos, photo shoots and interior design. The workshop is geared towards dance choreographers, artistic directors, photographers, videographers, technical theatre crew and lighting enthusiasts.

This workshop is suitable for new art teachers, especially those teaching the Study of Visual Art paper. How does one write about art and works of art? How do you translate a visual and sensory experience of art into words, and shape your thoughts into an essay? What makes an art essay interesting? What should one look out for in an art essay? Are there different styles of writing about art?

Masterclasses for DUET

Dates: Sunday 15 August & Saturday 21 August
Venue: The Substation Theatre
Time: 1pm to 4pm
Fees: $30 (inclusive of 1 ticket to DUET)
Min/max no. of Participants: 15 to 25 people
Attire: comfortable clothes.
Age: 12 years old and above

Open to students, freelance dancers and members of the public. Some dance or physical theatre experience required.

Come and experience the process that created the original and stirring dance movements featured in Duet.

In this three hour workshop, participants will be brought through the improvisational methods used to create the multi-dimensional and unique dance movements featured in the performance. Participants will also experience and execute these dynamic dance phrases, and gain a first-hand understanding of the inner workings of the creators and performers of this dance piece.

All participants are entitled to 1 ticket to DUET.

Open to students, freelance dancers and members of the public with at least a year of movement training like dance, yoga, or martial arts.

In this workshop, Raka Maitra will impart the basic techniques of Odissi, a highly stylised dance form with a strong technique and profound literary content from Orissa, East India. Participants will also be exposed to the exercises that were used to develop Raka’s own unique contemporary dance vocabulary for Variations On A Theme.

The workshop will be highly beneficial for dance and theatre practitioners, as well as for anyone who is interested in gaining an insight into this unique and meaningful dance form.

All participants are entitled to 1 ticket to Variations On A Theme.

The Actor’s Physicality in Space: A Workshop by Elizabeth de Roza and TheatreStrays

Suitable for: all actors, performers, and dancers of all levels who wish to extend their physical vocabulary, enhance spatial awareness and presence, refresh their physical training, or interested in furthering their skills for stage performance.

This workshop will hone an actor’s craft through a series of exercises that will improve his or her spatial and physical awareness. Participants will learn to create characters through physical gestures and rhythms, as well as explore the extended architecture of the body, in the process extending his or her physical range.

Yes! Contemporary Art for Your School 2010

Suitable for: Any teacher who is interested in accessing contemporary art.

This workshop seeks to provide teachers with ideas and tools to accessing and appreciating contemporary art, to start thinking about strategies for introducing contemporary art to their students.
