Bring your own battery operated toys for circuit bending

Discover electronics in a fun and innovative wayby turning your sound toys into a unique and one of a kind sound instrument. Circuit bending is the creative customization of the circuits within electronic devices such as low voltage, battery-powered guitar effects, children’s toys and small digital synthesizers to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators. The beauty about circuit bending is that you don’t have to know much about electronics. Circuit bending is about discovering new things and exploring your toys. It is very safe as the toys are all battery operated.

Emphasizing spontaneity and randomness, the techniques of circuit bending have been commonly associated with noise music, though many more conventional contemporary musicians and musical groups have been known to experiment with “bent” instruments. Circuit bending usually involves dismantling the machine and adding components such as switches and potentiometers that alter the circuit.

The Substation is proud to launch Directors’ Lab, Singapore’s most extensive theatre directing mentorship programme. This 18-month long programme is aimed at supporting theatre practitioners seeking to develop their capabilities in theatre directing.

The first of its kind, Directors’ Lab is a research and mentorship programme focused on developing theatre directing methodologies with the guidance of theatre and performance practitioners based in Singapore and Southeast Asia. It seeks to help theatre and performance practitioners develop strong inter-disciplinary and inter-cultural directing sensibilities, and Singapore-specific directing methodologies.

Directors’ Lab is open to proposals in any genre of theatre performance in any, but not limited to, Singapore’s four official languages. The programme welcomes proposals from practising Singaporean Citizens or Singaporean Permanent Residents.  Successful participants will receive a monthly stipend of $500 and will be expected to direct a performance at the end of the programme. Depending on its complexity, the final performance may receive up to $10,000 in production funding. During their research process, participants are also required to present work-in-progress performances, as well as public workshops and detailed documentation of their progress.
