This second installation of the Syndicate Subsessions presents the first international guest of the series. Mercury Prize nominee, Jon Hopkins, will grace the stage at The Substation Theatre in conjunction with British Council’s ongoing city-by-city initiative, Musicity. Syndicate resident, Max Lane, is also set to unveil a collection of new materials on the same night.
Known for his productions and studio contributions to albums by Brian Eno, Coldplay and David Holmes, Jon Hopkins started his career by performing keyboard for Imogen Heap. After releasing his seminal third album, Insides, in 2009, Hopkins developed an intense live show to support the release, resulting in club and festival performances across Europe and the United States.
Meanwhile, Syndicate’s own Max Lane has been busy working in the studio for this Subsessions installment. Moving away from his signature beat-bouncing & semi-club-friendly sounds, Max Lane will explore the minimal side of things and has been writing narratives to be delivered & sung by MC Masterpiece. Presenting the visual journeys for both performances will be Syndicate’s resident visualist, Brandon Tay.

There’s Something About Me: Dixie Chan presented by Felicia Low

The Substation Classroom 1
Admission: Free
This is an InHouse event
felicia low says…
“Dixie’s work highlighted dilemmas and struggles faced by the sex workers – and what struck me the most was how the film portrayed these dilemmas and struggles as silent and untold. I believe that there is great potential in Dixie’s approach to her filmmaking, and I would like to support her effort in finding a personal visual language through the use of film, to highlight a social cause.”
During her days as a Political Science student, Dixie Chan developed an interest in documentaries centred on social issues and human rights. About 2 years ago, she became a volunteer of Project X which advocates the rights of sex workers in Singapore. She hopes to deepen her knowledge of filmmaking and produce films that can inspire people to be more active in social issues.
There’s Something About Me
For the 2nd year of The Substation’s Associate Artist Research Programme (AARP), our current batch of Associate Artists will be inviting emergent artists to present their work in a monthly series of lecture-presentations. An expansion to the AARP, There’s Something About Me is a new platform for our Associate Artists to introduce artists whom they personally believe in, and initiate dialogue and sharing within the artists and public community about their works.

… The eye is on fire; forms are on fire; eye-consciousness is on fire; impressions received by the eye are on fire.
- Prince Gautama Siddharta, 563-483 B.C.
The exhibition Darshan is a result of a six-month long collaboration between Catalan artist, Mariona Vilaseca and Singapore-based Indonesian artist Kelvin Atmadibrata. Darshan explores sight as a means of spiritualisation. The exhibition is part performance, part installation, created out of the residue of a fire ceremony. Both artists were selected for the inaugural residency exchange program between three partner organisations: SingCat, Grey Projects and Nau Coclea. Photo credit: Darshan by Mariona Vilaseca.
