Human instinct is to play. Every child begins discovering the world through the exploration of their senses, especially with their hands. They are also natural inventors and philosophers, making sense of the world through speculations, imaginations and intuitions.
A damaging change in this innate ability to think innovatively occurs when adults enforce an anaesthetic learning formula: sit still, watch, and imitate. Such reproductive learning not only stifles mental freedom by shutting off all sensory experiences, but also hinders a child’s aptitude to observe, communicate, and investigate.
Shall we play another way? is a series of six play-shops devised by artists and educators who see the importance of promoting purposeful play in our sterile environment. Instead of focusing on specific subjects of the arts or sciences, we present tasks and questions to stimulate the creative and critical mind across the standard curriculum.
Program conceived by Yuun.
Playshops devised by Eve Tan, Lai Chee Kien, Koh Jantimah, Zai Kuning.

Butoh – Workshop
By Syv

Every Friday, 8pm – 10pm
The Substation Classroom 1
Admission: $25 per session, drop in.

Each class will start with massage or shiatsu followed by meditative sounds to warm up the body and relax the mind
Butoh is a fascinating, powerful and poetic dance created in Japan after WWII. It is quite unique in a way that movement is not dictated from the outside, but comes from the inner world of each individual.
Both a healing and creative process, Butoh is a personal journey through the rhythm of your body. It is a great way to connect with yourself, with others and the surroundings.
By letting go of your daily consciousness, you will find a new freedom in expression and in the way you perceive yourself, with no judgment of right or wrong, with no bounding to any form.
Through imagery and various conditioning techniques and exercises, you let your body be moved by your own memories, feelings and stories. By bringing awareness into the body, you will be able to reconnect with yourself, to release tensions buried in your body and mind, to express and play with your emotions and body.
And eventually to transform everything into your own dance.
What you can expect from this movement form:
- discover the freedom of expressing yourself by exploring the space of your body, and the space outside of your body
- develop your awareness, feel connected to yourself and the others
- use movements to reach physical and mental blockages and to release them
- feel centered and grounded
- reach and express your emotions
- rediscover the joy of moving, have fun and do something different!
**No dance experience required**
