Ming Poon says…

I have only known Pat Toh as a performer. Recently she has stepped into a different shoe, going from performing to making her own works. This year has seen two new works from her: Raw: Homogenous presented at the Esplanade and Pretty Things at The Substation. It is in this new capacity as an emerging creator that I would like to present her, to find out why she decides to create works, what her vision of theatre is, what she hopes to find in it and what she has to offer us.

Pat received the Shell-NAC Arts Scholarship and completed a Bachelor of Dramatic Arts (Acting) at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, Australia. She created Homogenous recently, an ongoing research project that delves into the act of walking. She is also the recipient of The Substation’s Open Call programme for Performance, where she created and directed Pretty Things.

There’s Something About Me

For the second year of The Substation’s Associate Artist Research Programme (AARP), our current batch of Associate Artists will be inviting emergent artists to present their work in a monthly series of lecture-presentations. An expansion to the AARP, There’s Something About Me is a new platform for our Associate Artists to introduce artists whom they personally believe in, and initiate dialogue and sharing within the arts community and with the public about their works.

Lecher of Art 11: Conversation Piece

Lecher of Art: Lecture 11
Conversation Piece by Cheo Chai-Hiang
Thursday 15 November 2012, 8pm
The Substation Theatre
Admission: Free
This is an InHouse event
*Please note: Has mature co
ntent (coarse language, sexual references and violence.)

The Lecher of Art is a series of performance-presentations that revisits ways of exploring the art of speech while ‘lecherously’ engaging the audience. These seemingly fictional, un-assumed and alternative methodologies of speech and presentation contradict the authoritative, anticipated and doctrinal manners in which lectures are conventionally delivered.

Conversation Piece consists of four segments: teapot, moon, erhu and hammer. The four segments are not in any particular sequence. This improvisation piece revolves around the following quotes in which the artist becomes the storyteller:

I have nothing to say and I am saying it. — John Cage

So easy to look at, so hard to define. — Bob Dylan

There is no solution because there is no problem. — Marcel Duchamp

Ya Ya Yah Ya Ya … — Joseph Beuys

Cheo Chai-Hiang currently lives and works in Melaka and Singapore, having spent over 30 years developing his creative practice, and teaching at universities in the UK, Italy and Australia. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in London, he was awarded the position of Rome scholar at the British School in Rome, Italy. Cheo’s work and thought negotiate trajectories through domains related to identity, culture and place. His practice spans a wide range of disciplines, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance and writing. He is also an independent curator.

Bani Haykal says…

“If there is ever a chance for any individuals to re-imagine sounds, be once again curious about every inanimate or single-dimensional thing we breathe in everyday and believe that life is waiting to happen and reanimate these fabrics of consumerism, revealing multiple facets of truth, Mohamad Riduan has a philosophy to trigger that chance.”

Mohamad Riduan has exhibited and performed in The Esplanade, Furor Space, The Substation and recently collaborated with Rubin Hashim in the Future of Imagination 08 at Goodman Art Centre. He is best known for his works of sound sculpture, performance art and improvised-experimental music. Riduan is also a member of a collective group called OFFCUFF, a multi-disciplinary performance collective focusing on structured improvisation incorporating dual visual projections and dual sound components.

Zaki Razak says…
“Kaizan’s revision of traditional Malay dance emphasises on the exploration of non-linear gestures, interventionist approaches and collaborative exchanges. Kaizan aims to break the conventions of cultural rites and offers the audience a fresh narrative – based on the critical study of mainstream Malay culture.”

Randai is a folk theatre of the Minangkabau ethnic group, usually performed as a theatre-in-the-round to achieve equality and unity between audience members and performers. Randai performances are a synthesis of alternating martial arts dances, songs, and acted scenes.

“Experts have not yet determined exactly what causes phobias to develop. However, there are numerous theories on their development. According to learning theory, phobias develop when fear responses are reinforced or punished. Both reinforcement and punishment can be positive or negative.

Positive reinforcement is the presentation of something positive, such as a parent rewarding a child for staying away from a snake. Positive punishment is the presentation of something negative, such as a child being bitten by a snake.” Lisa Fritscher, B.A. (Psychology)
