At The Substation conference, “The Arts Community and the University”, we aim to explore some of the reasons why these two communities don’t seem to be more entangled. Featuring speakers: Loo Zihan / Wong Hui Yu, Paul Rae and Charlene Rajendran.

What are the relationships between the arts communities and the universities in the Singapore? Or, rather, what should this relationship be? What do the universities want from the local arts communities, and what do local arts communities want from Singapore’s universities? Details

Since the government’s decision to build a road through Bukit Brown Cemetery wasannounced in 2011, Singaporeans from all walks of life have flocked to the 200 year-old cemetery to accquaint themselves with its rich heritage and lush greenery. Local volunteers, academics, and artists have dedicated their time and craft to capture, recordand understand the legacy and meaning of Bukit Brown and its place in our nation’s history.

This year mass exhumations and the construction of the eight-lane road will begin. Celebrating Bukit Brown aims to showcase the efforts of ordinary Singaporeans who have worked tirelessly on Bukit Brown. It is a one-day event comprising photo exhibitions, poetry, expertpresentations, theatrical readings, a public forum and a film screening. We invite you to bring artefacts, family mementoes and creative output (art, painting,poetry, music) to share your stories, and pen on the wall what Bukit Brown means to you. Descendants will share their journeys with you. Come celebrate our national heritage with us. There will be books and other merchandise available for purchase. Details

This is an OpenHouse event 

SlutTalk is SlutWalk Singapore’s attempt to contextualize the movement to Singapore, critically engage with it, and to raise awareness about local issues. Various organizations will be presenting talks, discussions and workshops. Joining us will be Eros Coaching, The Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE), The Gender Collective, The Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics (HOME), and Etiquette Singapore. We will be discussing rape culture in relation to sexual minorities, migrant workers, relationships, the arts, advocacy work and support structures.

Artist Talk: Saturday 23 February, 2pm in The Substation Gallery

The School never Asked asks three young ladies how they figured out sex and their sexuality in their teens. Previously from the Normal Technical stream, these young women, who identify as homosexual, bisexual and heterosexual respectively, share about falling in love, breaking up, parental expectation, responsibilities and possibilities in making sense of life in Singapore. Their sharing aims to become accessible material for other present students in the Normal Technical steam to pick up, as an insight into life.

Felicia Low will present her research to date in the form of an exhibition in The Substation Gallery. Felicia is an Associate Artist of The Substation, and The School never Asked is her work-in-progress presentation under The Substation’s AARP. Do come for Felicia’s talk on Saturday at 2pm!

The Freedom Film Fest (FFF) was initiated by Malaysian NGO, Pusat Komunikasi Masyarakat ( KOMAS ) in 2003. FFF has been the platform for activists and filmmakers to showcase their films and also to advocate issues of importance such as human rights to the public. The festival’s circuit in recent years has included Selangor, Penang, Johor, Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore.

Singapore Alternative Art and Book Festival

The Singapore Alternative Art and Book Fair (SGAAB) offers a cost-effective platform for handicrafts creators, artists, small independent bookshops and publishers to display and sell their handicrafts, artworks and books to a select audience of arts, books and film lovers.

Participants will also be able to share their passions for their craft, books and artworks through talks and discussions during the course of the SGAAB. You can launch a new book, display your skills or speak on a pet topic for an hour or 2 hours if you choose. The SGAAB will be held in conjunction with the 2012 Freedom Film Festival organized by Function 8 Ltd at the Substation on the same date.
