R.I.T.E.S. is an artists-initiative organised as a non-profit event to platform new ideas and artists in sonic art, time-based and performance art-related practices. Its objectives are to present an eclectic mix of performances that are informed by visual aesthetics, technological integration and conceptual integrity involving art-making and the social and cultural contexts that are related to performances. It explores art activities that are spatial, the way in which performance is linked to cultural, ethnic and geographical elements of the body, and at the same time exploring how all these elements can be bound to the global, technological, cultural and economic shifts in our daily life. Remembering Kuo Pao Kun – An Open Call for Memories The Substation Theatre
Monday 10 September, 12pm – Tuesday 11 September 2012, 12pm Admission: Free This is an InHouse event
Kuo Pao Kun, founder and first Artistic Director of The Substation – A Home for the Arts, passed away on 10 September 2002. He left behind a legacy of iconic plays, influential thoughts, and this precious independent art space that has been a creative playground for many different artists and communities since it was first founded in 1990. This delicate and raw space holds hope and potential for engagement, sharing, and learning, through various modes of contemporary artistic community practice and discourse. It is within this space that diverse voices were found and heard, and continue to this day to make the critical processes of unlearning and relearning possible for emerging and practicing artists, as well as for a diverse range of communities and civil societies.
As part of The Substation’s SeptFest 2012, The Substation will open its theatre to the public from 12pm on Monday 10 September 2012, to 12pm Tuesday 11 September 2012, and is inviting everyone to visit at any time during this 24hour period and share memories of Kuo Pao Kun and of the home he built, through any form of artistic expression.
The artists who will be presenting on Monday through to Tuesday include Benjamin Ho, Verena Tay, Kai Lam, Peter Sau, Irfan Kasban, Kenneth Kwok, Chee Keng and Li Cassidy. We welcome visitors who would like to leave a message in Kuo Pao Kun’s memory or would like to contribute to the lineup of presentations. Please join us for this intimate sharing session!
These presentations will be open to public for free and will be documented for archival purposes. There will be light refreshments available.

Work-in-Progress presentation: The Substation Theatre, Monday 30 July, 7.30pm
Oh you pretty, pretty things.
Growing up and finding your place in the world was once a procedure, easy, and defined. A far cry from the ambiguous journeys of today.
In times of tribal past, a boy braves the night in a sacred cave, and seizes the next day as a man. A girl begins to bleed, and is isolated in a hut. Returning days later as a woman.
But what are our maturity rites of today?
This theatrical experience explores lost youth through tales of love, friendship, desire and their aftermath. Go with some not so innocent child-like characters on the journey of ”growing up”, and discover how their imaginative world reveals real lives and dark events.
The passage of youth is a time when our sense of what the world has to offer expands with concepts of love, hate, death and lust. Enter the private, fantasy world of these characters and revel in their secrets.

*Please note that the performance contains some mature content.
An artist is kept alone somewhere, dreaming of coffins and parking lots, a cat and even a prince. The electricity generated by such thoughts crackles and pulses in the maps of his mind. Then one day, he wakes up in an electrical substation. He decides to make it his home, and to invite others to share in his dreams. Do you remember this story?
This performance interrogates the role of artists in society, and presents a meditative homage to the founder of The Substation, the late Kuo Pao Kun, a decade after his passing. BluePrince is presented by The Substation and The Blue Statesmen, an independent collective of theatre artists comprising Bryan Tan, Robin Loon and Casey Lim, and is performed by Oliver Chong. Written by Robin Loon, and conceived and directed by Bryan Tan

They’ve never met, yet their lives are so similar, connected by a third woman.

“Experts have not yet determined exactly what causes phobias to develop. However, there are numerous theories on their development. According to learning theory, phobias develop when fear responses are reinforced or punished. Both reinforcement and punishment can be positive or negative.
Positive reinforcement is the presentation of something positive, such as a parent rewarding a child for staying away from a snake. Positive punishment is the presentation of something negative, such as a child being bitten by a snake.” Lisa Fritscher, B.A. (Psychology)
About the Lecher of Art
The Lecher of Art is a series of performance-presentations that revisits ways of exploring the art of speech while ‘lecherously’ engaging the audience. These seemingly fictional, un-assumed and alternative methodologies of speech and presentation contradict the authoritative, anticipated and doctrinal manners in which lectures are conventionally delivered.

Syndicate Subsessions Featuring Aya Sekine, Sleep Easy and Brandon Tay Saturday 25 August 2012, 8pm The Substation Theatre Admission: $20 available from the box office, contact Mish’aal 6337 7800 / boxoffice@substation.org This is an InHouse event
Syndicate Subsessions continues to widen its sonic spectrum with an evening which will witness an improvised performance by acclaimed jazz pianist, Aya Sekine, and the dreamy atmospherics of Sleep Easy.
Trained in jazz piano and improvisation, Aya Sekine is no stranger in the local jazz circuit. With her regular nights at Club LʼOpera & Blu Jaz Café, Aya is one of the best jazz pianists around. For Syndicate Subsessions, Aya will present a side rarely seen in her performances here in Singapore; her love for experimental sounds and improvisations. She will build and improvise her set based on the visual narrative created by Syndicate resident visualist, Brandon Tay.
Sleep Easy is a solo project by multi-instrumentalist, Isa Ong, who is also known for his involvements with Amateur Takes Control and Pleasantry. A project which sounds more personal, and laid-back, Sleep Easy “tries to be the short story secretly tucked into the front breast pocket of a writer, a paltry symbolism of reverie, of ponder and of mere thought”. The dreamy compositions are crafted carefully with a wide palette of sounds which include electric/acoustic guitars, glockenspiel and electronic beats.
About Syndicate Subsessions
The Syndicate Subsessions is a series of quarterly performances curated by audio-visual collective, Syndicate. Known for their successful club nights, after two years of pushing experimental sights & sounds in Home Club, Syndicate challenges it own status quo by venturing out of a club and moving into a performance space.
Departing the Departed 旅立ち By pang + kanako Friday 20 – Sunday 29 July 2012, 12pm-9pm The Substation Gallery This is an InHouse event Reception: Thursday 19 July, 7:30pm
Departing the Departed is a site-specific installation work in The Substation Gallery. The gallery floor is covered by thousands of small white porcelain flowers, each individually handmade and sculpted by the artists.
A single fresh white lily is placed inside a vessel, forming the centrepiece of the installation. The vessel draws attention to itself, resembling a coffin. The funerary flowers suggest a kind of social, ritualistic practise and symbolism. The installation invites viewers to reflect on the nature mortality and impermanence, and participate in a ‘departure ceremony’ by taking a ceramic flower with them upon leaving the gallery.
From ‘don’t sit on me’ to ‘network of pricks’ An illustrated talk by Cheo Chai-Hiang Saturday 4 August 2012, 4pm–6pm The Substation Theatre Admission: Free
This is an InHouse event
In March 2011 Cheo Chai Hiang exhibited Don’t Sit On Me at the Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Asian Architectural and Urban Heritage, (National University of Singapore) Melaka. The title was borrowed from a rare graffiti image of a man’s ‘baobei’ scrawled on a seat on an MRT train in Singapore. The project was informed by Cheo’s own idiosyncratic reading of Kuo Pao Kun’s play Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral.
Cheo invited friends and colleagues to participate by contributing a discarded chair or stool which they then turned into a five-legged makeshift chair/stool with 3 long and 2 short legs. 70 artists, curators, writers and friends responded to his invitation. In this talk, Cheo will show slides and share his thoughts about the long journey he has traveled whilst undertaking this project, in particular the multiple/overlapping roles he plays as an artist, a project manager, a curator and a commentator. HAO Summit 2012: Culture Sub Culture Conceptualised by Khairuddin Hori & Audrey Wong Hao Summit: Wednesday 1 – Saturday 4 August 2012
HAOCamp @ The Substation: Saturday 4 August, 10am-5:30pm
The Substation
This is an InHouse event
The Substation proudly presents the third edition of the HAO Summit – a professional development, mentorship and networking ‘retreat’ programme for young arts and cultural workers in Southeast Asia. Around 40 young curators and arts managers from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Australia have participated in the last two editions of the HAO summit.
The HAO Summit plugs a gap in the Southeast Asian art scene: recognising that while the arts industry has undergone a boom in recent years, there remain few professional development opportunities for arts and culture workers. Unlike a regular conference, each HAO Summit revolves around a particular concept, emphasising open dialogue, experiential and peer-to-peer learning.
The theme of the HAO Summit 2012 is Culture Sub Culture, and looks at how geographies and landscapes have shaped cultural expressions, and how these have evolved over time, from forgotten moments in history, hidden sites rich in historical and cultural resonances, to today’s urban subcultures. Participants from the first two editions of HAO – the HAO Fellows – have been invited to conceptualise and run some activities in the programme.
HAOcamp @ The Substation
HAOCamp @ The Substation is a freestyle conference platform that brings together folks interested in exploring notions of culture and subculture through art, design, architecture or philosophy! Held in conjunction with the HAO Summit 2012, the HAOcamp is a platform for the public to engage in the summit’s theme – Culture Sub Culture - looking at how geography and landscape has shaped peoples’ cultural expressions and how these have evolved over time. Come present, show-and-tell, dialogue or listen to creative concepts and ideas related to Culture Sub Culture!
The corresponding HAO Summit 2012 is conceptualised by Khairuddin Hori & Audrey Wong and presented by The Substation. Learn about the HAO Summit at www.thesubstation.org/hao-summit-2012/.
Sound Art Open Call 2012 Presents Wagon By Joel Ong Curated by Zulkifle Mahmod Friday 31 August – Monday 10 September 2012, 12pm-9pm The Substation Gallery Admission: Free This is an InHouse event
Reception: Thursday 30 August, 7:30pm
Work-in-Progress Presentation: Saturday 14 July, 2pm at The Substation Theatre
For his work at The Substation in September 2012, sound artist Joel Ong will create an installation featuring an array of kinetic sound wagons that move about in the gallery. The wagon is not only a sound source but also actively receives input from its environment to subtly alter the acoustic environment. This installation allows sound and space to become gateways to multiple narratives by developing notions of space and identity while at the same time invoking and composing with the resonant frequencies of The Substation Gallery’s unique architecture. In so doing, the act of listening becomes less of a sidelined activity and more of a focused presence that demands its own time and space.

Consider, for a moment, that no one on this island speaks a common language. Now imagine the birth of a new language which could form after years of existence. Go ahead. If it weren’t for opinions on music suffering from commercial baseness, if it weren’t for that sense of dissatisfaction that music was defined by just one standard set by some guy with a pen or that music existed in presets of the past, we might still be excited listening to someone yawn and clap.
In part two of this year’s Tribal Gathering of Tongue Tasters, listen to the trippy and lush musings of the enigmatic MONSTER CAT, resonating life and all its innards through their songs, and Kai Lam, explorer, observer and artist who channels his expressions through a wide range of artistic practices including sound.
Now imagine the music language formed when these social actors meet. Imagine them and yourself conversing through music. Listen to the trippy and lush musings of the enigmatic MONSTER CAT, and explorer, observer and artist, Kai Lam. These two performers will be in residency at The Substation for two weeks prior to the gig, where they will be collaborating and developing their material.
LAST DAY OF THEIR RESIDENCY AT THE RANDOM ROOM THIS FRIDAY : MONSTER CAT – 2PM-5PM MONSTER CAT + KAI LAM – 6PM-9PM

An experimental Bharatanatyam duet. A meditation on womanhood, maturity and love. An exploration of that thin line between timeframes, between memory, reality and dream. Between languages and cultures that meet in our lives, between the classical dance form and performance improvisation.
This collaboration between two dancers of different backgrounds and life journeys examines the concept of Pushpanjali, an offering of flowers that traditionally opens a Bharatanatyam performance. Inspired by the poetry of award-winning Singaporean writer Dan Ying.

Mind Eater is the GUMBO masterpiece, which won the special commendation award at the 2003 Melbourne Fringe Festival. This piece has seen continuous development through performances in Melbourne, Tokyo, Osaka and Adelaide. The powerful performance is characterised by grotesque yet simple stage art, colourful costumes and soulful music. A combination that keeps audiences enthralled. Full of black humour, the piece throws truth and lies into frame and begs to consider “what is human life?”
Mind Eater is the intriguing story of a girl and her search for happiness in a world of judgement and societal expectations. It is a journey of one soul as reincarnated across three different lives consumed by: paranoia, dependence, and altruism. Another key character is Mr. Master, who can move between this world and the other. He has done all kinds of evil things, and he escapes hell through reincarnation. He spends his time carelessly and irresponsibly interfering in the lives of the living.

Other Singapores: Intercultural Stories Saturday 7 July 2012, 2pm-6pm Unfortunately we’ve had to postpone the conference to a later date.
We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused, and hope to see you at the conference when a new date is confirmed. The Substation Theatre Admission: $15 available from the box office Contact Mish’aal 6337 7800 / boxoffice@substation.org Early bird discount: $10 (purchase before 30 June 2012) Bulk booking Discount: $10 (per ticket for bookings of more than 10)
The second edition of The Substation Conferences considers contemporary culture from diverse local perspectives. Speakers include: John Gee, freelance writer and former president of Transient Workers Count Too; Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib, founding member of Leftwrite Centre and an activist with The Reading Group; playwright Chong Tze Chien; and Shabbir Hussain Mustafa, curator and researcher.
The term interculturalism came into circulation in the 1990s in fields like theatre studies and was often used to designate experiments where artists deliberately mixed and matched distinct cultural practices. In contrast, our aim with this conference is to explore the interweaving of different cultures as something far more ordinary and at the same time absolutely fundamental to Singapore society. However, even though we may be always already intercultural in Singapore, too often we tend overlook our diverse many “Other Singapores” — this conference aims to bring together in conversation a few of these lesser known stories.
This series of conferences is convened and moderated by Lee Weng Choy.
There’s Something About Me: Dixie Chan presented by Felicia Low Wednesday 6 June 2012, 8:30pm-9.30pm The Substation Classroom 1 Admission: Free This is an InHouse event
felicia low says…
“Dixie’s work highlighted dilemmas and struggles faced by the sex workers – and what struck me the most was how the film portrayed these dilemmas and struggles as silent and untold. I believe that there is great potential in Dixie’s approach to her filmmaking, and I would like to support her effort in finding a personal visual language through the use of film, to highlight a social cause.”
During her days as a Political Science student, Dixie Chan developed an interest in documentaries centred on social issues and human rights. About 2 years ago, she became a volunteer of Project X which advocates the rights of sex workers in Singapore. She hopes to deepen her knowledge of filmmaking and produce films that can inspire people to be more active in social issues.

Lecture 8 - The Mad Conferences of Professor Ma: Photography and Performance V.1.1 By Gilles Massot Thursday 17 May 2012, 8pm-9.30pm The Substation Theatre Admission: Free This is an InHouse event
The Mad Conferences of Professor Ma
The disciplines of photography and performance have developed an intricate inter-relationship over the course of their respective histories. In fact, it could well be said that each assisted the other in finally attaining acceptance by high art institutions in the later part of the 20th century. In this new edition of his mad conferences, Professor Ma explores the rich interaction of these two disciplines in a two-part presentation of their histories, and their expansion in relation to each other.

(un)it: HD85828 is a research project which looks into people living with HIV, and their collective invisibility in society. Continuing from the last two phases of his AARP project, Ming returns from March till May to resume the 3rd phase of his research. At the end of this phase, he will present his thought process and experience in a performance presentation.

There’s Something About Me: Gerald Leow presented by Zaki Razak Wednesday 16 May 2012, 7:30pm-9.30pm The Substation Classroom 1 Admission: Free This is an InHouse event
zaki razak says…
“Gerald is an apt marginal figure who fits Edward Said’s representation of an intellectual: someone who visibly represents a standpoint of some kind, and someone who makes articulate representations to his public despite all sorts of barriers. The standpoint of some kind refers to the prevalence of colonial ideology that attempts to construct a homogeneous and negative influence on society.”
A self-taught artist in his own right, Gerald Leow’s background in sociology does play a part in his artistic process where situations and behavioural traits of society are critically assessed. In this case, his abiding interest is in questioning the seeming rise of a popular culture and pondering on its demerits.

The heart and soul of The Observatory is in its constant reinvention. With each release, the members have persisted in their experimental take on the pop songform. In 10 years, The Observatory has gone from folk electronica to prog to avant rock, approaching a more primal, new dark wave sound with their fifth album, CATACOMBS. Putting preoccupations about genre aside, The Observatory explores music that’s texturally complex, viscerally emotional and splintering in its bleakness. A study in delusion, insanity and obsession, CATACOMBS provokes and inspires in a deeply enigmatic way. Even at its coldest and most abstract, it is human to the core. If you’re ready to face a few demons, catch this 2-night performance by The Observatory as they present defining new songs off CATACOMBS for the first time to an audience. Bani Haykal will also feature as a guest performer during the concert. Image courtesy: Flee Circus. Find out more by visiting www.theobservatory.com.sg
Update from The Observatory: “We have released more tickets for both Friday and Saturday nights’ shows. Remember, these shows will be the first time we are playing Catacombs to an audience. We’re really excited to have Bani Haykal as our guest. We have been rehearsing together and the new songs are shaping up really nicely with Haykal in the mix. There will be a ‘Pay What You Want’ bar, for which your kind tips and donations will go to all our super hardworking volunteers. So get your tickets early. Doors open at 8pm. Come early to grab a drink or our new Catacombs Tshirt. See you all.” – The Observatory

The Lecher of Art – Lecture 7 seVen: pondering over Malay weddings by Zaki Razak Thursday 5 April 2012, 8pm-9:30pm The Substation Theatre Admission: Free This is an InHouse event
About: seVen: pondering over Malay weddings
With the mighty influence of the economy overtaking spiritual self and public pace, our articulatory faculties seem to be held captive; ever submissive to the insurgence of capitalism and never recognising the conflicts of cultural production. From the ‘fixed’ demand of dowry to the monotony and imbecility of wedding reception and rites, what is seemingly ‘clumped’ to a misrepresentation is in dire need to be revised and reformatted. Is there a way to resist a canonical cultural practice and re-introduce a formation of culture, which recognises its criticality and creativity? Zaki and his panel of selected personalities aim to discuss this social phenomenon.

“The nature and the themes of Zihan’s works inevitably kick dust in our faces, by bringing out those sticky questions that we prefer not to ask. They make us and him – feel exposed, leaving a burning feeling in our guts. This, I believe, is what keeps his works fascinating and relevant to me.”
Loo Zihan is a Singaporean moving-image, performance and installation artist. He received a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BFA from Nanyang Technological University. His films have been screened in various film festivals including AFI Fest (L.A.), Pusan International Film Festival, Newfest (New York City) and Frameline (San Francisco). Learning to Make Fire By Haseena Abdul Majid (Singapore) & The Migrating Troop; Theater Alliance (Indonesia)
Friday 4 May 2012, 8pm The Substation Theatre Admission: $20, for booking please contact haseena.heil@gmail.com This is an OpenHouse event
Learning to Make Fire is a dance interpretation based on Pussyfoot, a collection of poetry by Haseena Abdul Majid (Singapore). In this physical exploration of text, director Citra Pratiwi (Indonesia) responds with sheer manic improv. Pussyfoot is about the desperate delay of catastrophe in love, in life. A heightened awareness of sensuality and obsessive focus on the body, on violence, on manipulation, is substituted over and over again in this dance. The intense confessional tone of text becomes an obsessive destruction in dance.

In a huge rustic house in upper Bukit Timah lives Tan Ying Hsien and his mother Dr Nalla Tan. Nalla suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and her condition has deteriorated to the point whereby she is a stranger even to herself. While Dr Tan was an active member of church, her youngest son Ying Hsien calls himself agnostic, and unconvinced about life after death. In a shophouse unit in Queenstown lives the Neo family. Filled with books about Buddhism and cooking, it reveals Mdm Tay Siew Hwa’s areas of specialties. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, she devotes more time to self-study about her religion and life after death, while undergoing chemotherapy. Her oldest son Alex Neo, builds his own shrine of beliefs with religious pendants and symbols from Thailand.
Guests are invited to participate and witness rituals of healing. Photography and soundscape installations will evoke the range of emotions experienced by the mothers (Alzheimer’s sufferer and Cancer patient) in trying to reach out emotionally to their sons, as well as the abstract phenomena of how religion functions.

Reception: Meet the Artist on Saturday 3 March, 6pm
InSoon Felch, originally born in South Korea, received her MFA in painting/sculpture at Western Michigan University in 2000. Her most recent works incorporate sculptural elements into painted works, transforming not only the outer appearance of these pieces, but also the fundamental structure of her canvas-shaped paintings. InSoon’s installations are often suspended from the ceiling and incorporate materials such as metal, canvas, paper, silk, fabric and sawdust.
Although primarily non-objective and non-representational, she considers her work to be an intensely subjective response to the various aspects of the painterly reality around her: lines, colors, figures, and shapes. InSoon has been traveling to museums and galleries around the world for nearly 20 years. Recently she has exhibited her works in France, the United Kingdom and Denmark.

The first two plays – Genap40and W.C. – were previously staged to small audiences, and this presentation marks the completion of the trilogy with the premiere of 94:05 alongside the other two. Performed by three talented theatre and TV actors, Sani Hussin, Mastura Ahmad and newcomer Rian Asrudi, Hantaran is a performance not to be missed.
“Expectations of fate and faith are tussled with in language that was both sophisticated in its intellectual curiosity and dramatically poetic.” - The Straits Times Life! on Genap 40

In 1993, Singaporean artist Josef Ng’s performance Brother Cane resulted in a public debate over obscenity in performance art and a subsequent ten-year restriction of the licensing and funding of performance art in Singapore.
Cane by Loo Zihan consists of a re-enactment of Brother Cane based on an eyewitness account by artist Ray Langenbach, a performative lecture reconstructing incidents surrounding the event based on various oral accounts, and pre-filmed segments with individuals involved in Brother Cane and performance art in Singapore. The work seeks not only to commemorate and honour the memory of this performance, but also to explore the possibility of representing performance art, a form often perceived as ephemeral or transient.

It is a visual experiment that expresses the interconnectivity of our subjective and objective realities, and serves as both icon and iconoclast in addressing the causes and symptoms of societal complexities and contradictions in the island-state of Singapore.
Building on their previous approaches towards the evolving social and cultural landscape, the artists developed the stylistic application and conceptual framework in this new, collaborative set of drawings, installations, collages and photographs.

The idea of Happy Together came about after an encounter with a group of elderly musicians from the Traditional Southern Fujian Music Society. This music group comprises of a vocalist, flute player, pipa and 2 string players. Their lives revolve around the playing of melancholic ancient music which provides a link to their ancestors. After the initial meetings, the different artists would gather every Sunday to listen to their weekly playing while following temple rituals like keeping a long-term promise to old friends.
As a contemporary artist, one seeks for new understanding of such ancient music heritage and its relevancy in contemporary art-making. Striving to comprehend the interpretation of this music, dance artist Elysa Wendi and traditional arts researcher Wang Tian Yu have been exchanging perceptions and ideas in meeting after meeting, in order to decipher the beauty of Nan Yin whilst making connections within their own creative processes.

Performance in Frames: Video Mobiles Friday 13 – Thursday 26 January, 12pm-9pm The Substation Gallery This is an InHouse event
Reception: Friday 13 January, 7pm
Performance in Frames: Video Mobiles is an exhibition of performance art specifically made for film. Performance Art is typically defined as a genre that has to be experienced spatially and in real time, with all our senses. However, we often end up viewing performances which have been recorded or documented as videos, or photographic stills.
This exhibition is about artists who create performances for the camera, not as documentation, but as works of art. It explores the extent to which various forms of performance influence the subject, content and presentation of art. Investigating the differences between video art, moving images, live performance art which is recorded, and performances made specifically for celluloid, this exhibition will highlight the similarities and differences between these distinct, yet related, modalities.

SlutTalk Singapore A SlutWalk Fringe Event
Saturday 3 December, 2pm-10pm The Substation Classroom 2 Admission: Free This is an OpenHouse event
SlutWalk started in Toronto in February 2011 as a response to Constable Michael Sanguinetti’s statement at a York University safety forum that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized.” This sparked a backlash which has resulted in SlutWalk groups forming all over the world — from Seoul to New York City to Helsinki to Delhi to Johannesburg — to protest a culture that blames victims for rape, and to challenge the attitudes that come with that, which usually leave sexual crimes under-reported as a result. We recognise that we need to not only put a stop to acts of sexual violence, but also to excuses that allow such violence to continue. For more info visit: http://slutwalksg.com/

“Where is God?”
Man has been asking, and has been asked this particular question ever since he was introduced or some would strongly believe, re-introduced, to the concept of the higher being. The higher being, God, Elohim, Jesus, Gaia, Vishnu, or Allah has led Man to spend his existence approving or disapproving. In the name of a particular God, beliefs have been forced and reinforced, to be embed in the hearts of Man and then reiterated in blood. But, those dramatic episodes in Man’s history, most probably start with that one simple question. ‘Where is God?’. That same question gradually spawns an entire variation of itself; ‘Where is my God?’, ‘Where is your God?’, ‘Where are you God?’, or ‘Where the hell are you God, in times when I needed you the most?’.

A small voice that echoes…all is lost, all is lost. Colliding dance, performance and drawing deep inspiration from the conceptual world of visual design, 0.01 seeks to create an illusionary world, at once tragic and fantastic, where the inhabitants reach for pure, unadulterated liberation in the face of imperfection, glorious and monstrous.

The performance is divided into sections, starting with the vishnu vandana, the teentaal vilambit laya, the ashtnayika—portraying eight heroines through facial expressions—and the tarana, a type of composition Indian classical music in which Persian and Arabic words are applied alongside the tabla. Maithili Sharan Gupt’s poetry Yashodhra, about the wife of Gautama Buddha and her pain of separation from her enlightened husband, will also be featured. La Carte de Tendre was a French map of an imaginary land called Tendre produced in the 17th Century. It depicts the “geography of love” according to the Precieuses of that era: the River of Inclination flows past the villages of “Billet Doux” (Love Letter), “Petits Soins” (Little Trinkets), and intrepid travelers brave the dangers of “Le Lac d’Indiference” (Lake of Indifference). The villages, roads, and topographic features in this allegorical representation trace the myriad facets of love and its associated perils. Lynn Lu and Andrée Weschler are revisiting the map of love and will propose a new reading of the Carte of Tendre with video installation and performances art.

There will be a special vernissage from 6:30 to 9pm on 16 Nov 11 – opening day
Painted surfaces become victims of an artist’s restless search for the essential thing that (s)he, and only (s)he, is able to say. Original works are broken down and intuitively taken to the edge of destruction, there to be rendered porous and abstract. While the paintings retain whispers and shadows of their former selves they re-emerge as vibrant and varied in terms of colour, sensitivity and formal concept.
By painting and un-painting is she negating reality or revealing one that is concealed?
Working in oils, sourcing from selected literature and nature, the artist draws on Northern Romanticism in terms of landscapes recalled, and passing from solid state to the ethereal.

The Substation Love Letters
I Want You When You Say No
12 writers | 12 poems | 12 postcards | 12 months
Singaporean-based writers of different races, cultural backgrounds and sexualities, have been invited to explore the erotics of “un-belonging”. A sense of belonging, dislocation, or ambivalence forms the focus. In any relationship, does one escape into an eroticised state of Otherness and difference, or does love only serve to reaffirm one’s own identity? While writers are encouraged to interpret the theme freely, they are encouraged to question the assumptions behind any relationship to a person and place – and preferably with a social or political consciousness.
The works of these writers are presented as love letters, from The Substation to members of the public, and are published as limited-edition postcards, each released on a monthly basis at The Substation only, where the public can pick them up for free. Discover this month’s poem by hurrying down to The Substation to collect your postcard, or read it online at www.substation.org/loveletters

Change is part of a series of exhibitions about life. Everything is changing around us; the cities we live in, the weather, people near us. This is nothing new. Homo sapiens, our ancestors, learnt to adapt to drastic changes in the environment, and that ability is believed to have been critical to their survival on earth. The pace of change has continued to increase exponentially, which leaves us to question whether we are able to meet the social, economic and environmental challenges that lie ahead, and whether we will be able to adapt to new realities.
In its first instalment, Change China-Singapore 2011, features three artists from China and five artists from Singapore to respond to the subject. On show are a variety of works, ranging from painting to sculpture, photography, performance and video. There will also be live performances by Jin Feng and Shu Yong at the opening reception.

The Hall of Mirrors By Bruce Quek Friday 9 – Friday 30 September 2011 The Substation Gallery Admission: Free This is an InHouse event
Reception: Thursday 8 September, 7:30pm
The Hall of Mirrors is an installation that resembles an echo-chamber. Exploring the relationship between infrastructure and information flow, The Hall of Mirrors explores how conveyed information is often devoid of meaning and personal relevance. Situated in the gap between information and meaning, The Hall of Mirrors constantly changes and highlights the inexorable nature of time and the unpredictability of the environment.
The installation uses publicly available and socially relevant statistics. The occurrence and reoccurrence of these statistics, measured in seconds and in minutes, are synchronised to clocks that constantly alert the viewers of their frequency and reality. The installation aggregates this information and ‘humanises’ these statistics by letting viewers experience them on a personal and individual level. Offering ample opportunity for reflection and self-examination, the work also asks the audience to consider the implications of the ways in which information is packaged and presented.

Face without Name By Bayu Utomo Radjikin Friday 3 – Sunday 19 June 2011 The Substation Gallery This is an InHouse event
Reception: Friday 3 June, 7:30pm
Face without Name is Bayu Utomo Radjikin’s 7th solo exhibition featuring paintings and large-scale charcoal works on canvas. This figurative series manipulates both medium and composition, while investigating the male psyche and the subject’s gaze.
Bayu Utomo Radjikin’s debut at The Substation, sees some continuum from the artist’s solo exhibition in Kuala Lumpur last year titled Unnamed. The artist revisits large portraits of his distinctive male protagonists dressed as Malay warriors, but the inclusion of a new element – the figures wearing fighter pilot helmets – is a slight deviation.

Reception: Thursday 21 April, 7:30pm
Identity defines what we are and who we are, differentiates us, and distinguishes us. But while we see it as central to our being, the issue of identity is also very much part of public discourse. Why is identity so contentious, yet so crucial to how we define ourselves? In modern and cosmopolitan Singapore, we are constantly grappling with this issue of identity. How do we define it? The Singaporean today has multiple identities. What these identities are, and the debate within each, will be captured through drawings, paintings and graphic installations.

The Garden – I Will Send You to a Better Place
By Zai Kuning Friday 25 March – Sunday 3 April 2011 The Substation Gallery This is an OpenHouse event
A worthy failure is more valuable than a mediocre success – Kuo Pao Kun
Since May 2006, Zai Kuning has been campaigning his unhappiness toward how The Substation Garden has been exploited and misused. For the Singapore Biennale 2011, he proposed to close the music venue Timbre, which occupies the garden, for a period of two months so as to restore the garden as a space open to all artists. The proposal failed to materialise. With a body of new work that includes installation, drawings, and a monologue, Zai will respond to this ‘failed project’ by interweaving stories of his childhood, coming of age, his sojourn in the arts scene and correspondence with Matthew Ngui, director of the Singapore Biennale 2011. This show-all, tell-all exhibition and performance is a poignant reminder of how our landscape, history, and memories are all severely threatened by relentless vested interests.

“De Change” is a play set in the 1990s when economic tension is high and anxiety fills the air; a time where hopes and dreams dwindle. The story primarily revolves around Choon Huat, a woman in her early twenties. She is a second-rate actress who struggles to keep her dream of being a famous actress alive despite all odds. Choon Huat comes from a broken and poor family, her mother suffers from bronchitis and her good-for-nothing brother, Ah Soon, gambles away what little she brings home. In no time, her brother becomes heavily indebted. Unable to repay what he owes, Choon Huat is forced into prostitution to clear the debt. At the same time, she is betrayed by her best friend, May, when May gets together with the love of her life, Ming Jie. Depressed and desperate, it is not long before she contemplates suicide.
When it seemed like all hope was lost, an unexpected twist in the story occurs. And she finds herself presented with an opportunity she cannot resist – a trade-off that can make her dreams come true. However, in exchange, she must give up something that is most precious to her. Thinking that she has nothing left to lose, she agrees to the barter. Indeed, she gets what she has always dreamt of, but at the end of the day, is it worth the change?

In 1964, African-American freedom fighter, Malcolm X delivered a compelling speech a few months before the Presidential Election. The speech, ‘The Ballot or the Bullet’ is considered to be one of the most important American speeches of the twentieth century. It was a speech to revive peoples’ consciousness – mobilising their minds to participate at an instant, rather than letting them drag their minds to passivity – to vote consciously rather than to vote blindly.

Graffiti art, celebrated as an alternative, youth-centric art form in the mass media, has the unique ability to reach out and connect with the youths through its usage of bold colours and imagery. In recent years, such striking “graffiti-esque” visuals have been extensively used to launch and market youth-oriented campaigns and products.
Local graffiti artist, Zul Othman aka ZERO, investigates the relationship between graffiti art, advertising, and youth-oriented consumer culture in his graffiti art show, The Spectacular Spectacular. Details

Can absence be enacted, captured… in fact seen in a film? Can the viewer see what is there but not apparent, fill in the gaps for himself and construct his own movement from memory?
In his presentation, diskodanny goes in search for liminal spaces that elude us because they exist as empty gaps. These spaces are found during the enactment of a movement. They cannot be seen explicitly but they exist so obviously that we take them for granted.

Artist-in-Residence The Substation is partnering with Singapore Management University in a pilot Artist-in-Residence programme this year. The SMU-ASEAN Artist Residency provides opportunities for Singapore and ASEAN artists to interact with students as well as have valuable time to reflect and create in a studio hosted on SMU campus. Our current resident artist is Dani Iswardana from Solo, Indonesia. Dani has been studying and exploring wayang beber since his studies at the Surakarta Art Instute. Dani does not paint traditional wayang beber scrolls that typically tell stories based on Javanese Panji legends. Rather, he appropriates characters and stories from various Javanese fables, legends and episodes from Mahabharata and Ramayana into the context of today’s contemporary life. Dani has also worked in artistic departments of renowned Indonesian choreographers such as Sardono W. Kusumo, Bambang Besur Suryono, Fajar Satriadi, Ketut Rina and Suprapto Suryodarmo. Details

What would you do when you win a million in the Singapore Big Sweep? The choices are endless, but for some, winning a fortune is as debasing and disorientating as a horrific ordeal in a car on a rainy night. The millionaires, a ‘subaltern Malay couple’ mechanic at a petrol station and a salesgirl, re-enact their childless marriage baiting each other on a never-ending car journey to take food home to their cat. She berates him about his impotency and other inadequacies; he about her besotted behaviour over their cat for whom he had just bought 32 tins of canned food in a cat food sale. He loves his job. She loves her cat. But the condominium-bound tabby cannot speak and acts as a silent confidante rather than a high counsel for their marital dilemmas. Details

ARENA explores the use of existing objects e.g. doors, glass windows, concrete walls and pillars in a physical space to create an aural architecture. These objects will be triggered by using DC motors and solenoids which will be programmed on the computer based on algorithm. Algorithm is a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer. The space will be converted into a ‘concert’ without players.
Arena also explores the ability of human mind in the space. Are we able to imagine in a space that is ‘cold’ and bright? Are we able to enjoy the ‘concert’? The interior of the space will be covered with white carpets. The whole space will lighted with white fluorescent lights.

What skin are we living in? This exhibition explores appearance and actuality, whether it is our own identity, celebrity or the environment that we live in. The mass media and information culture has changed how we view the world and caused information saturation. These 4 young Artists have taken time to stop and think about what appears on the surface and what lies underneath the skin. Each Artist has chosen their own theme which runs through their work giving a rich and varied exhibition with both vibrancy and subtlety.
There will a Q&A with the directors after each screening
Purnama 2 is a short film screening event organized by Singapore Malay Film Society (SMFS). It strives to be an annual fixture that provides filmmakers the opportunity and exposure to showcase their films. The committee members hope that such an event will allow filmmakers to collaborate and network with one another and produce more short and feature films for Singapore’s film industry.
Purnama first began during Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2008, showcasing 11 short films by local directors. As Hari Raya Aidilfitri is based on the sighting of a new moon in the Islamic calendar, Purnama, meaning full moon in the Malay language, was an apt name for the event.
First Take, happening every first Monday of the month, is a regular platform for new and first-time filmmakers to show their work and share ideas with other filmmakers and audiences. This programme was inspired by discussions with local filmmakers and Moving Images supporters and provides a vital and vitalizing forum for new and first-time local filmmakers.

What if I want to water ski? And other questions A Digital Media Installation by Victoria Cattoni. In this beguilingly titled exhibition, What if I want to water-ski? And other questions, artist Victoria Cattoni asks us to unveil our perceptions and perhaps, misconceptions, of the Muslim headscarf for women, otherwise known generically as hijab, or locally as tudung.
Part of a broader project, ‘Re-Dressing the Veil’, begun in 2007 in Malaysia with the support of an Australia Council for the Arts grant, the exhibition What if I want to water-ski? And other questions draws on Cattoni’s ongoing exploration of cross-cultural experience, taking us on a journey between Singapore, Penang and Cairns/Mareeba in North-eastern Australia via the hijab.
