The Tribal Gathering of the Tongue Tasters is The Substation’s new music and sonic arts programme, which will present a curated series of performances on the first Saturday of every month from October to December 2010. The Substation has invited a selection of the finest emerging and established sound artists, bands and collectives to challenge the deifnition of home-grown music and performance. Join b-quartet, mux and friends as they kick off the series on Saturday 2 October 2010.

Stay tuned for future performances from the likes of The Analog Girl, Max Lane, Andree Weschler, Tiramisu and Spacedays in November and December. There will be a flea market at each of these events, held at The Substation, from 5pm – 10pm.

b-quartet

b-quartet is a band that actively disregards genres and conventions in their search for a more authentic musical vernacular. Blending elements of funk, jazz, metal, and progressive rock is testament to the band’s eclectic influences and musical cues.

Their latest album has been described as ‘ emotive and cerebral’, and as a commentary on consumerism, modern culture and identity. Based on the history of jazz and the potential of music to be an absolute form of expression, conformity has replaced consciousness is an album which sees the band break new ground and develop their trademark sound. b-quartet is Bani Faizal, Bani Haykal, Bani Hidir, Bani Raizan, Luqman Hakim and Siraaj Anwar.

They have been hailed as one of Singapore’s “most exciting live acts” by The Straits Times Life! music journalist Sujin Thomas in his article on b-quartet that was published on Friday 6 May 2005.

Editor of online KL-based music site Think.com.my, Chris Chew votes b-quartet as the best Singapore act for Baybeats 2007, “Expanding to a six-man lineup, b-quartet’s bipolar collection of jazz-rock tunes haunted their way into total recall, particularly ‘Shoebox’ with its progressive swells and thoroughly gorgeous melody.”

b-quartet has released 2 records, tomorrow is our permanent address (2008) and conformity has replaced consciousness (2010), both under Aging Youth Records.

Associate Artists of The Substation

mux is a collective formed by Bani Haykal, Luqman Hakim and Siraaj Anwar which experiments with the nature and form of performance.

mux’s approach to performance deals greatly with the coexistence of storytelling and layered, yet minimal, sound and music compositions. The collective works extensively with guitar pedals, phrase recorders, microphones and various appliances and props to generate live sound samples.
