The Right Way To Draw

taniaThis drawing workshop imparts traditional elements and principles of art through hands-on activities and an introduction to works created by artists ranging from old school masters to contemporary creatives. The session also prepares the students to develop a strong visual vocabulary.

Venue: Classroom 2
Course Fees: $180 (6 sessions exclusive of material fees)
Dates: 17 April to 12 June 2010, Saturdays (break on 1 May, 22 May and 29 May)
Time: 2pm to 4:30pm

Last day of registration: 14 April 2010,  by 8pm.

Learning Outcomes
An awareness of the basic skills required to create convincing representational drawings as well as historical examples and contexts in which these skills have been applied. A basic familiarity and confidence with materials such as charcoal and drawing pencils.

Session 1
An introduction to the workshop and to each other.
A short discussion with regards to what constitutes self-portraiture.
Short slideshow presenting a wide range of self-portraits created by artists
An introduction to the grid method utilising Chuck Close
Participants to utilise the grid method to create their own self-portrait.

Session 2
An introduction to creating form using basic shapes and contrast.
An introduction to chiaroscuro and presentation of works by artists who’ve applied tonal contrast to their drawings/paintings in order to create the illusion of form.
Participants to utilise ideas of shapes and contrast to replicate “paper chains” on paper using the removal method via charcoal on tracing paper.

Session 3
An introduction to perspective, proportion and depth
A short presentation illustrating concepts of eye level and vanishing point using works by artists who deal with landscapes and interior spaces.
Participants to create landscapes utilizing the alphabets of their name and principals of vanishing point and horizon.

Session 4
An introduction to principals of classical composition, diagonals and the rule of thirds.
A short presentation of neo-classical art and current day photography that utilizes these principals,
Participants to work on a still-life based on these principals.

Session 5
A continuation of the drawing that went on the week before, towards the completion of a full-piece of work.

Session 6
An introduction to contemporary art as stemming from the birth of photography and the seeming “death” of painting.
A short presentation illustrating the development of photography alongside images created by artists who were then trying to re-define the purpose of painting through abstraction.
Participants to experiment with mark-making.

About the instructor
Tania De Rozario is an artist and writer who has been exhibiting in Singapore for the past seven years. She is the recent recipient of the National Arts Council’s International Development Grant, which took her creative and curatorial work to Amsterdam, and is currently incubating her literary skills under the National Arts Council’s Mentor Access Project. When she is not peeling paint of her clothes, she teaches Contemporary Contextual Studies at LASALLE College of the Arts.
