Consider, for a moment, that no one on this island speaks a common language. Now imagine the birth of a new language which could form after years of existence. Go ahead. If it weren’t for opinions on music suffering from commercial baseness, if it weren’t for that sense of dissatisfaction that music was defined by just one standard set by some guy with a pen or that music existed in presets of the past, we might still be excited listening to someone yawn and clap.

In part two of this year’s Tribal Gathering of Tongue Tasters, listen to the trippy and lush musings of the enigmatic MONSTER CAT, resonating life and all its innards through their songs, and Kai Lam, explorer, observer and artist who channels his expressions through a wide range of artistic practices including sound.

Now imagine the music language formed when these social actors meet. Imagine them and yourself conversing through music. Listen to the trippy and lush musings of the enigmatic MONSTER CAT, and explorer, observer and artist, Kai Lam. These two performers will be in residency at The Substation for two weeks prior to the gig, where they will be collaborating and developing their material.

LAST DAY OF THEIR RESIDENCY AT THE RANDOM ROOM THIS FRIDAY :
MONSTER CAT – 2PM-5PM
MONSTER CAT + KAI LAM – 6PM-9PM

Tribal Gathering of Tongue Tasters is curated by Bani Haykal. Find out more about the event and the performers below

About Tribal Gathering of Tongue Tasters

Conceived and introduced in 2010, the first season of Tribal Gathering of Tongue Tasters presented an array of interdisciplinary collaborative performances centered on the dynamic music landscape in Singapore. The first season featured performances by The Analog Girl, Andree Weschler, Tiramisu, Marla Bendini and more.In this second season, The Substation plays host to a new direction of performances, where 2 contrasting music acts come together to interpret each other’s work in their own music / sonic languages. The new season also features a two-week residency period for performers held in The Random Room at The Substation.

With each performance presented in 3 acts, including a combined jam, the second season introduces a dialogue session to further engage both performers and audience in the process of their collaboration.

About MONSTERCAT

MONSTER CAT channels lush, emotive folk-rock with delicate instrumentation and intense imagery. Layered harmonies evoke the supernatural as fractured love songs cradle listeners between the depths of intimacy and menace. Fragile yet powerful; their music echoes the ebbing of your subconscious hurt. From the dramatic intent of The Smashing Pumpkins to Fever Ray’s visceral force of myth and music, the four-piece tries its best to imitate these artists but fails spectacularly. Creating instead, a sound that is all their own.
