Performance Open Call 2010: Call for Submissions
The Substation presents Performance Open Call 2010, a new instalment of The Substation’s annual Open Call programme.
The Open Call programme was first initiated in 2008 as a visual arts platform to support and realise strongly artistic, critical and rigorous visual arts proposals. The new Performance Open Call expands upon the current focus of the programme by inviting artists to submit proposals with a strong performance element. One proposal will be selected and realised at The Substation Theatre from 16 – 18 September 2010.
In 2008, as part of the Open Call programme, The Substation presented two exhibitions: Videology, curated by Urich Lau, which showcased works by Claes Erik Eriksson, Julie Lee, Patricia Ho, Maxine Chionh and Veliana, and DEcomposition II: Publication is Prostitution by Vertical Submarine (Justin Loke, Fiona Koh and Joshua Yang). Subsequently, Vertical Submarine was selected to participate in the President’s Young Talents 2009 exhibition at 8Q SAM.
In 2009, The Substation exhibited the work If a tree falls in the forest by the Institute of Critical Zoologists. In the same year, Robert Zhao, resident artist of the Institute of Critical Zoologists, won the 29th UOB Painting of the Year award.
Noor Effendy Ibrahim, The Substation’s Artistic Director, adds, “For the inaugural Performance Open Call 2010, The Substation is looking to select one proposal which possesses strong artistic ideas and critical rigour to be presented in any form of performance or live art presentation. We are looking to identify emerging, promising performing artists in order to nurture them in the creation of a new work, just as we have aimed to do in the Visual Arts Open Call.”
The Performance Open Call proposal must not have been performed or presented in public in any form, and must not be longer than 60 minutes in duration. Only artists who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents are eligible for selection.
Closing date for submission of proposal is 13 June 2010.
