Lyrics from Lockdown is an unforgettable journey through hip hop, theatre, spoken word and song. This true story begins when Brooklyn’s own Nuyorican Grand Slam Champion, Bryonn Bain (“60 Minutes,” “The Village Voice,” BET-J’s “My Two Cents”), is wrongly imprisoned in NYC jails – while studying law at Harvard. Weaving together the critical and comedic voices of his Trinidadian family, a Death Row survivor, and even a recovering Skinhead, this dynamic solo performance takes no prisoners as Bain tackles America’s unresolved contradictions with virtuosic lyricism.

The play gave me a whole new perspective to the meaning of Law and theatre. Tis my first time and won’t be the last. I now realise the power of using theatre as a medium – a voice to be heard to create an awareness of the issues that are troubling you where you are. It’s also way of learning and education for us to better understand the background and issues arising from the history of the country that the actor/author is coming from. We salute Brother Bain’s bravery to stand up and stand out from the crowd and continue to live in the same place and not run away — to pursue and LIVE out the purpose in his life using the talents given him by the Creator. Until we do this, we won’t ever find any MEANING in our existence on this planet. Here’s to more COURAGE and FAITH.
