Latitudes in Transit – part of the Women in Arts Festival 2010
Latitudes in Transit
Part of the Women in Arts Festival 2010
Thursday 7th January to Thursday 21st January
The Substation Gallery
Co-organised by: Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) and The Substation, in Partnership with the Embassy of Mexico. Pictured: “Retrato como un desierto” 155 x 204 cm by Magali Lara.
“Latitudes in Transit” celebrates the diverse expressions of womanhood. All the artists live their own realities and face and process them through art. The 15 pieces by female artists from Mexico will feature realism, abstract and other forms of paintings.
The artists are the reflection of the time in which they live, a time that marks their experiences and their contemporariness. “Latitudes in Transit” highlights the way in which artists live and interpret time, either as the timeless passing of events, as the dissonance between day and night, or as the intermittent way a culture reflects it in its own way.
In terms of their gender, all face it in the same way as they experience space and time. That is why the works offer contingent and concomitant positions.
The exhibition has three areas of focus:
- Works that include organic and structural elements such as clay, metal and earth. These elements reflect the traditionalism in their craft and technique.
- Works that contain pieces in which myths are analyzed from a free point of view and without prejudice.
- Works that deal with how women see themselves through art. In Mexico and Singapore alike, women live and work showing their very special way of sensing reality.
