This is an InHouse event

It is the material and use of the material that gives me the idea and not the other way round- Robert Filliou

The main focus of these improvised pieces is the investigation, discovery and creation of unusual and individualised responses to various materials and props. Performers will consider space and time as materials too, and interact and improvise their pieces with the intention of getting away from the position of ‘theatre performer’.

Open Call for Performers:
Perform in Jason Lim’s ‘Island’

The main interest in these improvised pieces is the investigation, discovery and creation of unusual and individualized relation with the materials and/or props on site.  Performers will emphasize on all the data and endeavors to strive towards a certain level of self-awareness through an allotted time (4 to 6 hours, please see performance schedule below). Performers will consider the space and time as materials, at the same level and with the same importance as other materials and/props with which one relates and should interact and improvise in this with the intention and purpose of getting away as far as possible from the position and bodily behavior of the theater performer. It is not intended or necessary for the performances to convey a structure of narrative. The idea has already existed through the performers bonding themselves with their actions and materials.

Material List:
Plain white ceramic tableware’s
Medium sized glass tumblers
Clear cellophane tape
Tables and chairs
Water
Red thread

Venue: The Substation Theatre

Scheduled performance dates:
17th March 2011, 7pm – 10pm
18th March 2011, 7pm – 10pm
19th March 2011, 3pm – 9pm

Workshop days:

14th, 15th and 16th March 2011, 10am – 6pm

The workshops are concerned with the theme of body and idea.

Body: In relation to the body, all the data and endeavours strives towards acquiring a sense self-awareness. The body, in performance, to be and should be considered as a material, at the same level and with the same importance as the other materials and objects with which one relates. One should intervene in this with the intention and purpose of getting away as far as possible from the stance or bodily behaviour of the theatre actor.

Idea: Focus will be on the idea, structures and the different parts or components of the performance. It will not be necessary for the idea to be conveyed in the performance. The communicability of the idea is not important, but only that it should be taken into account and that the idea exists, for the performer, as the element bonding the action itself.

3 days workshops (not in order):

Day one – workshop on breathing, walking and rhythm.
Day two – workshop on stillness and silence
Day three – workshop on improvisation with selected materials either brought in by participants or myself.

For more information, or to register as participants/performers, please contact Jason Lim at nosajlim@singnet.com.sg.
Closing date for registration is 7 March 2011.
