Identity defines what we are and who we are, differentiates us, and distinguishes us. But while we see it as central to our being, the issue of identity is also very much part of public discourse. Why is identity so contentious, yet so crucial to how we define ourselves? In modern and cosmopolitan Singapore, we are constantly grappling with this issue of identity. How do we define it? The Singaporean today has multiple identities. What these identities are, and the debate within each, will be captured through drawings, paintings and graphic installations.
About Rofizano Zaino
Rofi was born in Singapore in 1970 and attended the Temasek Polytechnic School of Design between 1991 and 1994 before embarking on a career as a brand designer and fine artist. He has produced, for many prominent brands, distinctive and meaningful designs that carry an artistic quality, revealing his love for art.
Rofi’s art captures the essence of the human state of mind through highly textural and emotive depictions of figures and portraits. By deconstructing faces and figures into layers of texture, synchronised colour or line work, he invites viewers to take a closer look at his subjects, to get a deeper sense of the emotion that lay within. His figures are bold but rendered sensitively to draw out the vulnerabilities of each character. This is Rofi’s first solo exhibition.
