Associate Artists / Performance / Law Soo Leng & Richard Philip
LAW SOO LENG
Soo Leng is a Director, Choreographer and Contemporary Dancer.
A dance graduate from Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts, Soo Leng has choreographed and performed in productions by contemporary dance companies such as Lasalle-SIA Repertory Dance Company, Ah Hock and Peng Yu, and Ecnad Project. She has also choreographed and performed in Malaysia and Salt Lake City (USA).
In 2006 Soo Leng choreographed and performed her first solo work in movement theatre entitled VERTIGOLAND 9 by 12. Soo Leng uses the relationship between the voice and the moving body to create performances that present what she views as the absurdity of life in the form of allegory.
She devises her work from improvisations that involve dynamic cross-relationships between text, music, movement and visual ideas.
Through her works Soo Leng seeks to present alternative views on the subject matter of her performance while challenging commonly held assumptions of the nature and value of performance itself.
Soo Leng started her collaboration with Director, Actor, Writer and Musician Richard Philip in 2005. This collaborative effort and the resultant interaction of the elements of dance, music and drama produced a series of works that provided a wide range of perspectives on various human interest topics.
Soo Leng and Richard have produced movement theatre pieces such as HUBBER which is a social commentary on the shifts of power and status in Victorian society and PRAY – A movement piece based on child prostitution. They intend to develop this collaboration further to produce new works that will bring upon the stage poetic forms that best describe the human situation.
RICHARD PHILIP
Richard Philip is a Director, Actor, Writer and Musician.
He worked as a feature writer and copywriter for three years till 2002 when he left his regular job to pursue his interest in theatre and music full time. With no formal training in the arts Richard learnt everything through experience, observation, and extensive reading up.
He started by acting in plays staged by local theatre companies such as ACT 3 Theatrics, The Necessary Stage, and CAKE Theatre. He also extended his focus in music and subsequently launched his debut solo album SPLENDID LOVE in 2004. One of his compositions was selected to be on a compilation album which was released in Los Angeles, California in 2007. Richard was also invited to perform his music in the 2007 Mosaic Music Festival as part of the singer/songwriter series.
The experience of acting, composing music and writing has developed in Richard, a unique approach when it comes to creating for the theatre. His self taught instincts do not bear the mark of institutionalized thinking. Instead they present a rugged yet relevant voice in today’s theatre. He uses his understanding of dramatic structure and theatrical forms, his grasp of music composition, his ability to write dialogue, his intuitive sense of stage dynamics and his adept usage of improvisation to create a kaleidoscope of dramatic impressions that, in their shifting, shed light upon the various areas of human experience.
