Short films in this programme are in-competition for the Audience Award for the top 3 most voted International and Local short films.

1) Meat at Block 320

Kenny Gee / 2009 / 3min / Singapore / NC16 (Some Disturbing Scenes)

Synopsis:
A post-apocalyptic vampire-zombie love story.

Director’s Statement:

Director’s Bio:
Kenny Gee is an up-and-coming Singaporean filmmaker currently pursing an MFA at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts Asia. “Meat at Block 320” represents his first foray into making films that combine the visceral energy of Hollywood blockbusters with the intimacy found in independent pictures. As of this summer, he is in pre-production for his 4th short film.

2) GOVERDOMME! (Goddamnit!)

Rene Pannevis / 2009 / 8min / Netherlands / NC16 (Drug References)

Synopsis:
The film director follows a usual day out of Jan’s tragic and absurd life. Jan sells drugs and medicines to regular customers and eats different pills all day long. ‘Goddamnit!’ is a funny but sad portrait of an angry young man in suburban Holland, captured in a neo-noir filmic style.

Director’s Bio:
Rene Pannevis was born in a hippie neighbourhood where life was a circus. After high school he worked at a TV-recycle factory where people lost body parts in the sanitory sewer system where poop slashed in your face and at a coffee factory resulting in his coffee addiction. He is enrolled in the M.F.A film program NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia (2007).

3) Liminal

Stephen Keep Mills / 2008 / 14min / US / R21 (Nudity)

Synopsis:
Ina and Joy are locked in a war of elimination. Over? A sweater. Ina thinks it makes her look good, Joy thinks it makes her look too good. Got scissors?

Director’s Bio:
Stephen Keep Mills started out as an actor. A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, he began his professional life with The Guthrie in Minneapolis in 1969, and over the course of 17 years, appeared with many leading regional theatre companies in US and Canada. Mills opted for directing and producing his own written works in smaller digital features in 2003 and he continues to experiment with the privacy of psychological drams.

5) Danse Macabre

Synopsis:
For a period of time, while we believe it to be perfectly still, lifeless flesh responds, stirs and contorts in a final macabre ballet. Are these spasms merely erratic motions or do they echo the chaotic twists and turns of a past life?

Director’s Bio:
Pedro Pires has most notably worked with Francois Girard in the films “The Red Violin”, as well as “The Sound of the Carceri” for which he won Emmy and Gemini awards for Outstanding Visual Effects and Best Visual Effects. He also worked in close collaboration with Robert Lepage on the visual conception of “Possible Worlds”.

Synopsis:
During an opulent and luxurious banquet, complete with cavalier servers and valets, eleven pampered guests participate in what appears to be a ritualistic gastronomic carnage. In this absurd and grotesque universe, an unexpected sequence of events undermines the endless symphony of abundance.

Director’s Bio:
Denis Villeneuve has rapidly achieved both public and critical attention for films showcasing his powerful and distinctive cinematic voice. His first two feature films “Maelström” and “32nd Day of August on Earth”were screened to critical acclaim at many international festivals.

Synopsis:
Julia and Eduardo are married and they look like a conventional couple. However, unimaginable true facts start to surface behind the supposed calm appearances. They are two lonely strangers behind reciprocal affection.

Director’s Bio:
Gorka Cornejo holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History and focused on film journalism and education. He teaches History of Cinema and Music in Cinema in different education centres and also works as an assistant director in films and television. “Yo sólo miro” is his first short-film as director.

9) Karleksbarn (Love Child)

Synopsis:
A young girl enjoys the perfect life of being the only child, when one day a new family member arrives.

Director’s Bio:
Daniel Wirtberg was born in Karlstad, Sweden, 1983. He started filmmaking at the age of twelve. At 18yrs old, he was accepted for the Czech film academy FAMU´s international program. Since his graduation in 2003 he has freelanced as a writer/director/producer and has been teaching filmmaking.
