A selection of indie US documentary short films that highlights social initiatives and indie filmmaking. With a post-screening Q&A by specialist Martha Foster, who will share her experiences as a documentary filmmaker in USA.

Specialists travel overseas as a vital part of the Showcase delegations, teaming with filmmakers to provide a range of views on the democratic process, documentary film, and American culture. Each specialist has practical experience in aspects of documentary and media, along with educational sophistication and a willingness to engage in discussions with many kinds of audiences.

About Martha Foster:
Martha Foster is a leading specialist in international documentary film and television. With graduate education in both anthropology and media, she has worked with universities, museums, festivals and broadcasters in the United States and Asia, created a highly prestigious juried international documentary festival, and developed story ideas for an Emmy award-winning documentary series for Chicago Public Television.

She has worked since late September of 2001 to establish and nurture the organization of Living Earth Television (LETV), and serves as Executive Director. The creation of Living Earth Television is the culmination of her life’s work with documentary, education and broadcasting.

Martha has worked and traveled extensively on four continents — Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. In September of 2008, she served as a judge for the new World Mountain Documentary Festival of Qinghai, China. In 2007, she spoke at the Magnolia Forum of the Shanghai International Television Festival. In 2001, and again in 2003, she was invited as the first and only American to serve as a juror for the Sichuan International Television Documentary Festival, a leading festival and broadcast market in Asia. She has taught television production personnel and students throughout China, including at Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai.

Martha has worked with the Smithsonian Institution, Chicago's Field Museum, Columbia College Chicago and Chicago Public Television. She has garnered recognition and awards at all phases of her career, including five Emmy awards in 2001-02, a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, and a Mass Media Fellowship through the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Beginning in 1995, she created and directed the Windy City International Documentary Festival. She has taught a Senior Seminar on Media and Values at Columbia College Chicago. She was selected as an Influential Woman in Business in 2003 by the National Association of Women Business Owners. She holds a Bachelors degree in Anthropology at Northwestern University and a Masters in Visual Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and has completed coursework for a Master of Fine Arts program in film and video at Columbia College Chicago.

1) Beginning Filmmaking

Synopsis:
A portrait of a very young artist and an enthusiastic father who discovers the truth in the clique “creative differences” when he attempts to teach his 4yr old daughter about filmmaking. Ella learns what she wants to, discards what she doesn’t, and is determined to be a star in her own mind.            

Director’s Bio:
A former film and video production instructor at Stanford University and elsewhere, his films have won over a hundred awards and have been screened throughout the world.

2) Empowering the Yard

Emily Kirsch, Erin, Persley & Vincent Horner / 2007 / 11min / USA / PG

Synopsis:
The film profiles an inspiring project at a women’s prison in Oklahoma and introduces five prisoners who work as peer educators, conducting training for fellow prisoners on preventing HIV, AIDS and other diseases. The project serves as rehabilitation, job training and effective public health outreach because the five prisoners gain both public health knowledge and skills as educators while also delivering a powerful and important message to their peers. Officials are hoping to replicate the program across Oklahoma’s prisons.

Director’s Bio:
Kirsch is a graduating senior from San Francisco State University majoring in urban health, justice and sustainability.

Persley is working on her master’s thesis dealing with women who have been released from prison.

Horner is completing his final year in the undergraduate cinema program at San Francisco State University.

3) One Bridge to the Next

Kim Snyder / 2008 / 27min / USA / PG

Synopsis:
In 1992, Dr. Kim Withers began doing night rounds on the streets of Pittsburgh, offering medical assistance and support to the homeless. 15 years later, the organization he founded, Operation Safety Net, is a pioneering model in a growing movement to provide healthcare to the homeless. Dr. Withers and his team navigate riverbanks, bridges and alleyways to bring medical help and social justice to those who have fallen through the cracks of society.
