Honorary Award Wee Li Lin
Known for her signature subtle comedic touch, Wee Li Lin is one of the leading female directors in Singapore, for both film and television projects. A graduate from Brown University (Class of '96) in Rhode Island, USA with a BA in Art Semiotics, Li Lin also spent a semester in Tisch-NYU doing “Sight and Sound,” an intensive filmmaking production course.
Her award-winning short films have been celebrated in two local retrospectives. One, the first ever retrospective of a local short filmmaker. organized by the Singapore Film Society in 2003, which proved to be a big success; and again in 2004, a retrospective organized by the Singapore history museum (in conjunction with the Substation).
Li Lin's short film Autograph Book became the first Singapore film selected for the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival 2005 in New York. In 2007, she wrote and directed her debut feature film Gone Shopping starring local acting veterans, Adrian Pang and Kym Ng. Gone Shopping has since been in Official Selections in Puchon, Kerala and Udine in Italy. It was even nominated for the Asian New Talent Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival and Emerging Director in Narrative Feature Award at the Asian American International Film Festival in 2008.
Li Lin's progression between making shorts to feature films, leaves her as one of Singapore's most watched out for directors. She is now gearing up for the Singapore theatrical release of her second feature film, Forever, in major theatres in March this year. As at 1 December 2010, Forever is the first Singaporean film to receive a double world premiere, screening at both the Jakarta and Cairo international film festivals on the same date.
